Pneumonia Vaccine Ever (High Risk Ages 18-64)

Select a Planning Area
Measurement Period: 2018
Asked among high-risk* respondents ages 18-64 years: A pneumonia shot or pneumococcal vaccine is usually given only once or twice in a persons lifetime and is different from the seasonal flu shot Have you ever had a pneumonia shot?

*High-risk includes adults age 18 to 64 years who have been diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes, or respiratory disease

Why is this important?

Pneumonia is a serious infection of the lungs that develops when the immune system is weakened. It is mainly caused by bacteria, viruses, and mycoplasmas. Each year in the United States, about 1 million people have to seek care in a hospital due to pneumonia, and about 50,000 people die from the disease. Most of the people affected by pneumonia in the United States are adults.  Persons most at risk include the elderly, the very young, and the immune-compromised.  People whose immune systems are weakened are more susceptible to pneumococcal infection than their healthy counterparts. There are effective vaccines that help prevent infection by some of the bacteria and viruses that can cause pneumonia.
