Why is this important?

Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. The flu can cause severe illness and life-threatening complications particularly in older people, young children, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions. It can lead to pneumonia and can be dangerous for people with heart or breathing conditions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that in the United States, 5% to 20% of the population on average gets the flu and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized each year. The seasonal influenza vaccine can prevent serious illness and death. The CDC recommends annual vaccinations to prevent the spread of influenza.
