A Good Idea

Description

The DuPage Narcan Program (DNP) is administered by the DuPage County Health Department on behalf of a coalition of leaders, including the DuPage County Board Chairman, the County Board, the Coroner, the State's Attorney, the Sheriff, the Public Defender, the Chiefs of Police Association, the DuPage Regional Superintendent, and the The DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference. Through the use of the 'Train the Trainer' model, the DNP has been able to train over 2,000 individuals to administer an Naloxone inhalant in emergency situations in which individuals are found unresponsive due to an overdose.

Goal / Mission

The goal of the program is to provide police departments, schools and others with Naloxone and proper training to save lives from heroin overdose and to provide individuals with a chance to recover.

Impact

In the first six months of the second year, 26 saves were recorded.

Results / Accomplishments

In the program's first year, 32 saves from heroin overdose were recorded in the community. In the first six months of the second year, 26 saves were recorded. As a result of the program, the mission of the program was expanded to include a second step of follow up and intervention to assist in the recovery process.
