Why is this important?
Heroin is a highly addictive opiate made from morphine, a naturally occurring substance extracted from the seed pod of the Asian opium poppy plant. Heroin dependence has become a substantial public health problem, resulting in a significant number of medical, social and psychological problems, including the spread of infectious diseases (e.g. HIV and hepatitis), crime, violence and neonatal drug exposure.
